Royal George 1844

Convicts on the transport ship Royal George - 1844
The Royal George was privately chartered to transport the first group of Exiles to the Australian colonies. These prisoners were the first of a special scheme in which by performing certain qualifying processes the convicts gained a Royal Pardon on the condition that they accept transportation to the colonies and remain there for at least the term of their original sentence. The 21 Exiles on the Royal George were all transferred to ship from Pentonville prison , where they had been trained in trades that were felt to be in need in the colonies. Arrived Williamstown in the Port Phillip District on 11 November 1844
